Photographer Banning visits Tromsø

Perspektivet Mueum invites you to an eventful weekend when Dutch photographer Jan Banning comes to Tromsø to attend the opening of his exhibition Red Utopia. Banning, who is also a historian, combines an artistic look with a documentary approach. He has gained great international recognition for his photo series, which always has a social focus. The museum’s frequent visitors may remember his exhibition Bureaucratics displayed/exhibited in 2009.

In Red Utopia, Banning meets people and societies that still are advocates of communism. The photographer himself has never voted for a communist party, but he still has a sympathy for the supporters’ desire for radical change and a more idealistic world. This sympathy has resulted in a series of pictures that portrays communism carefully, and not least with Banning’s unmistakable perspective.

The exhibition opening will take place on Saturday 27 April at 14.00. Banning will himself be present and give an introduction to the project, in addition curator Astri Fremmerlid will give an opening speech.

Sunday March 28 at 13.00, the audience can experience an artist talk with Banning in conversation with head of education Camilla Erenius.

Both events have free entry and is open to everyone.
